Job Description
The Midwife will be responsible for delivering maternal and newborn care services, with a specific focus on the prevention, early detection, and management of neonatal jaundice. The role will include providing clinical care in health facilities and community settings, supporting newborn monitoring, and educating families on neonatal health and jaundice prevention. The midwife will work in collaboration with healthcare teams, community health workers, and families to ensure timely interventions for newborns at risk.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide routine maternal and neonatal care, focusing on the early detection and management of neonatal jaundice.
- Conduct regular physical assessments of newborns, monitoring for signs of jaundice.
- Administer treatments for neonatal jaundice, including phototherapy and referrals when necessary.
- Collaborate with pediatricians and healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive newborn care.
- Educate mothers and families on the causes, signs, and prevention of neonatal jaundice.
- Provide breastfeeding support, emphasizing its role in jaundice prevention.
- Guide families on monitoring infants for jaundice signs and the importance of seeking timely medical attention.
- Participate in community outreach to raise awareness about neonatal jaundice and its risks.
- Work with community health workers to inform families of available services and treatment options.
- Conduct home visits to follow up with newborns discharged from healthcare facilities.
- Assist in training healthcare professionals and community health workers on neonatal jaundice screening and management.
- Support peer learning and mentoring of junior midwives in neonatal care practices.
- Accurately document newborn assessments, treatments, and follow-up care.
- Report complications or critical cases to the Program Manager and refer severe cases to healthcare facilities.
- Contribute to data collection for monitoring and evaluation purposes, including neonatal jaundice cases and treatment outcomes.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure continuity of care for mothers and newborns.
- Coordinate with local health facilities to ensure timely diagnosis, treatment, and referral for jaundice cases.
- Support community health workers in providing outreach services, including birth and neonatal mortality records.
- Work with technical support and M&E teams to collect baseline program data.
- Ensure infection prevention and control measures are maintained at all times.
- Advocate for quality healthcare across facilities and communities.
- Maintain relationships with government heads and health facilities, while supervising, training, and coaching clinical staff.
- Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports, including data collation.
- Supervise and facilitate data collection across all programs.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualification and Experience:
- Registered Midwife (RM) or Bachelor of Nursing Science (B. NSc.).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in maternal and newborn care, including neonatal care. Experience in managing neonatal jaundice is an advantage.
Competencies:
